Project management benefits realisation
The project issues
While undertaking numerous improvement projects, the Council was completing projects and starting new ones without undertaking post-project reviews. As a result, projects were not being assessed for benefits realisation and efficiency gains. Socitm Consulting was commissioned by the Council to facilitate a tailor-made workshop on the pragmatic use of project management to address potential improvements in specific Council projects and to provide a realistic methodology for improving future delivery.
The Socitm Consulting solution
The project began with brainstorming with key stakeholders and staff to identify the priority issues for the project management team.
30 projects were then identified at the workshop for initial assessment. Through a prioritisation exercise, these were reduced to 10 and finally to 3 projects, which formed the focus of the workshop.
Through the use of techniques such as role play, brainstorming, working groups and exercises, the issues were fully explored. The exercises focused on the project data, on issues with and improvements to the business case and on measurable deliverables achievable through improving business processes. The outputs from the workshop were clear action plans to take the projects forward.
The benefits to the client
With insufficient internal resource within the Council to initiate a review of project management processes, Socitm Consulting used its expertise in successful project management methodology and project delivery to design a workshop that enabled the Council team to make immediate improvements to the delivery of current projects. Socitm Consulting was also able to provide peer group examples of best practice. It also provided a benefits realisation framework that could be used for reviewing and improving project delivery in the future.
